Le Rhône 9C was a 9-cylinder rotary engine rated at approximately 80 hp, one of the most widely used powerplants of the early First World War period.

Developed in France and produced under licence in several countries, it became known for its compact construction, relatively smooth operation, and good reliability. The engine is easily recognised by its characteristic external copper induction pipes.

It was widely used in early French and British aircraft, especially light fighters and reconnaissance types where low weight and simplicity were essential.

Typical applications included:

(Early French type) (Late French/British type)
• Caudron G.III
• Nieuport XI
• Nieuport XXI and others
• Caudron G.III
• Nieuport XI
• Nieuport XXI
• Bristol Scout
• Sopwith Pup and others

Engines of this type represent an important stage in the development of rotary engines before more powerful later variants became standard.
