The Le Rhône 9J was a 9-cylinder rotary engine producing approximately 110 hp (82 kW). Introduced in 1915, it provided more power than the 9C and became a mainstay of Allied single-seat fighters during mid-WWI.
Aircraft powered by the Le Rhône 9J
- Nieuport 17 – one of the most famous Allied fighters of 1916, highly maneuverable.
- Nieuport 23 – improved version of the 17, also powered by the 9J.
- Various experimental and light reconnaissance aircraft – used in small production runs.
Historical significance
The Le Rhône 9J gave Allied aircraft a reliable power boost over earlier 80 hp rotaries. It was instrumental in allowing Nieuport fighters and other scouts to achieve superior climb rates and agility, helping the Allies maintain air superiority in 1916–1917.
